Chapter 15 Emerging China

(4.) Does China threaten U.S. global economic dominance

Over the last couple of years, yes China has become a power house. There imports have been out standing and the us has fallen into it. Companies in the United States are trying to go cheaper and that means less U.S. Jobs and more jobs in other countries like china. Which makes them in more demand and increases their income and drops ours

So apparently China is meeting with The Dalai Lama. It is not sure if this is purely cosmetic move to try and qualm the Tibet issue. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet. So if they meet with him, have a good meeting, and tell him what he wants to hear, then the protesters may tone it down. All that would be left is the radicals. And radicals are easier to stop if they don't have as many followers. Radicalists stick out more by themselves. So either way it is a genius move by the Chinese government. I hope that it is a genuine effort instead of a temporary fix before the Olympics. It may actually make it worse if after the Olympics China goes right back to what they were doing.

Journal 5
This journal is about the treatment some South Africans are giving to Zimbabweans comming into there country for a better life. All of there actions are happening in the poorer run down sections of South Africa. Because of all the economic and political instabilitys in Zimbabwe alot of the people are traveling South Africa to make a better life for themselfs. Some South Africans are saying that the Zimbabweans are stealing job and doing criminal work. Last week 22 Zimbabweans were killed in violence acts and 200 people(South Africans) were arrested for rape, murder, robbery and theft. Some South African women have been lying to police saying they have been raped to drive out the Zimbabweans. The South African president is calling for an investagation on the violence and askes South Africans to be more hospitable because when South Africa was in need the bordering countries came to its help. The South African president is also rallying war veterans to educate and tell the story of how other African countries helped South Africa gain its freedom in hopes it will bring peace. This story reminds me somewhat of whats going on in the U.S. with mexican comming over to gain a better life themselfs. Alot of Americans think the same as the South African. Americans think the Mexicans will cause crime problems and steal jobs. As there is some violence going on against the Zimabweans there are also violence against the Mexicans in the U.S. its just you don't hear of it because the Mexican immigrants or workers are afraid of reporting it because they think they will be deported. I think its sad that these things are happening in both countries and they need to be stoped. Both countries need to stop and evaluate there pasts and think back to how they came about. When it come to America, we were built on immigration so who are we to stop people from comming in. We want so many people to take on the American way but we don't want them to come over. When it comes to South Africa, they were wellcomed with open arms as refuges from there neighboring countries such as Zimbabwe and these countries also helped the fight to gain South Africa's freedom. Which the only proper thing to do is give them the same hospitality.

Does Cuba threaten the U.S.? p. 286
According to the State Department, the answer is yes. They consider Cuba to be a “state sponsor of terrorism” due to Cuba’s growing relationships with North Korea and Iran. According to a report filed by the State Department, “Iran offered Cuba a 20-million Euro line of credit ostensibly for investment in biotechnology”. Although this gesture may be supportive of the claims that Cuba plans to help terrorist states to develop germ-warfare capabilities, officials from the State Department do not consider this to be a likely scenario. Other governmental officials see these new alliances, coupled with the numerous acts of Cuban-spurred espionage which have unfolded over the past 15 years, to be an enormous risk to national security. They now have the intelligence, the funding, and the backing to enter into an ever growing coalition of terrorist states who will stop at nothing to bring harm to the people of the United States.

Of course, and the same way were realizing it they are also. China has grown about 10 percent a year for 30 years, the fastest growth rate for a major economy in recorded history and is expected to surpass the United States by the year 2039. Crazy right?? I know.

China absolutely threatens the U.S. in economic circles, however I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. The U.S. has grown stagnant and uninvolved in the sciences and engineering instead most of the youth are focusing on becoming a celebrity or entertainer. The increased competition will continue to drive innovation and improve technology.
