I am a major sports fan. I am sure many people do not follow sports. Those same people probably do not pay attention to see the significance sports can play. The Olympics has always been a stage for foreign policies. That is readily apparent today with the protest group against China's involvement in Tibet. Politics taking center stage during the Olympics has happened throughout history. During the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany, the black sprinter Jesse Owens seemingly squared off against Hitler and his beliefs. Then the U.S. actually boycotted the 1980 summer Olympics in Moscow in protest of Russia's invasion in Afghanistan. That same year saw the U.S.(democracy) defeat Russia (communism) in hockey, in the 1980 winter Olympics. This seemingly brought unity to the U.S. against Russia. Russia was a MAJOR hockey power. U.S. was a major underdog. So in essence it seemed that democracy defeated communism.
The corruptness and subsequent fall of communism brought many hockey players over to the U.S. Fidel Castro's regime also saw many refugees come to the U.S. This brought a flux of baseball players to America to escape the poverty and corruption brought to sports. So sports and politics can and often do mix.

The real fun of the presidential campaign is just over the horizon: mudslinging. Sure, there's been some between the candidates, but that's hardly even considerable as foreplay with what I expect to see in the coming months up to November. Wouldn't it be great to see a candidate run on how good his/her resume is instead of how bad their opponents is? Or is our presidential election nothing more than a choice of the lesser of two evils?

Can the democrats win the upcoming election? JC mentioned above that he expects to see a lot of mudslinging going on in the coming months. I'd like to make a parallel between the colonial revolution and the democratic party of today - "Unite or Die". If the liberals can't get their act together, then we are in a for another 4 years of republican control of the white house. I am not a democrat, but I do think it is time for a change in foreign and domestic policy to bring the pendulum back towards center. Of course if it was up to me we'd have a true libertarian government, but the reality is we live in a b-partisan society.

The Iranian Conundrum,

As horrible as nuclear weapons are, the benefits of using nuclear technology is undeniable. A long lasting energy source that, if used properly, could end up being the answer to the worlds energy crisis. For America to try and police the world preventing research on nuclear technology is a serious mistake. Even Iran should be able to develop this technology. The idea that only major powers like the united states should have nuclear weapons is ridiculous. In fact, the knowledge that we have nuclear capability and other nations do not enables us to use them. If all countries had these weapons of mass destruction using them would be impossible as the consequences of a counter attack would be dire. The only real reason Iran should not to be allowed to develop nuclear weapons is the possibility that its a country that is harboring terrorists. These nation less breed of people have no fear of retribution.

Journal 3
This isn't really to much of an international thing but I found it quite interesting. Off of CNN I found a story about how researchers using robotic animals to find more about the animal world. Its proven to be very successful. The report talked about how the animals responded to the robots as if they were the real thing some times to the point that they were intimidated and ran out of hiding. I think this research could play a big role in things to come. This would make animal activist very happy to know that research could be done more in the outdoors rather then taking the animals to a lab to research. The robots could do help researchers figure out how some animals tick and what makes them work. A lot of scientist believe that humans and animals have similar instincts so it will help with psychological views on how th human minds think and act. I personally think that this research could help with the medical field, safe extermination and maybe back to the electronic pets. I think it can help with the medical field because animals are very smart and when they get sick know how to cure them self. They will search out and find plants and other ways to fix them selfs. Researchers could use these cures to help find cures in the human world. Along with that the robotic animals could be used for safely exterminating pests. Farmers could use them to scare away unwanted animals looking for a meal with out having to harm anything or people could use them in there homes to keep out or prevent pests from coming in. Animal control could use them to coral unruly or lost animals back to where they need to be. The research with the robotic cockroaches showed that the real roaches believed in the fake ones so much that when the robotic roaches decided to show dominance and pressure they scared all the other roaches out of hiding. The last thing which is already being used with some people is using robotic animals as pets. Some people are so allergic to animals but want one so bad so this would be perfect. They could actually use the robotic pets in hospitals to rehabilitate sick or injured people where real animal might spread germs. And speaking of rehabilitation, the robotic could be used to help motherless, endangered, hurt, or zoo animals get back into the wild, recover or stabilize.

Chapter 11 Democratization

(3.) Is Cuba on the verge of change?

I say yes it is. On Castro is gone and his brother see that Chavez is more of a problem. He will wise up make the peace and Cuba and the U.S. will be on the same page. Without the change Cuba will fall and into a recession.

Nihilism as a World Religion
Nihilism is the belief that truth does not exist. The textbook definition is that nihilism is a philosophical position that argues existence is without meaning, purpose, or intrinsic value. Movements such as Futurism and Deconstructionism have been categorized as nihilistic and some Christian theologians have claimed that postmodernism, as well as some aspects of modernism, represent the “rejection of God” and therefore is nihilistic. In the late 1800s, Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi first introduced the term to describe rationalism and support one of the theories of Immanuel Kant, which stated that in order to carry out a “reductio ad absurdum”, a reduction to the absurd, all rationalism reduces to nihilism. This belief in nonexistence has been utilized in many motion pictures, such as “The Big Lebowski” and “Fight Club”, as well, but it is a passage from Macbeth which truly summarizes the nihilistic perspective. William Shakespeare wrote:

“Out, out brief candle. Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more; it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.”
